New Research Opportunities within the FAMOS Project and LABIMA
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Florence has opened two research positions in the field of marine engineering, offshore technologies, and coastal processes, linked to ongoing national and international research activities.
Position within the FAMOS Project
A research position is available within the FAMOS Project (Sustainable, Reliable and Socially Acceptable Modular Floating IslAnds for Multi-use Offshore Spaces), funded under the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership.
The selected researcher will be involved in the development of advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations of floating breakwaters. The work will build upon existing conceptual models developed within LABIMA and will contribute to the creation of surrogate models for the optimization of offshore structures.
This activity represents a key step in the design and development of innovative solutions for multi-use offshore platforms.

Position within LABIMA
A second research position is available within LABIMA (Laboratory of Maritime Engineering), an internationally recognized research group specializing in coastal dynamics, marine renewable energy, and coastal protection.
The selected candidate will support research activities and contribute to the management and dissemination of scientific projects. The role will focus on enhancing the organization and communication of research outcomes, with the aim of strengthening their impact on society and supporting the laboratory’s growing involvement in international projects.

Both positions have a duration of 12 months and are based at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the University of Florence.

FAMOS at Mission Arena 4 Sopot, 28–29 April 2025
Researchers involved in FAMOS took part in Mission Arena 4, a key event on the Blue Economy, organised in Sopot by BlueMissionBANOS and the Sustainable Blue Economy Partnership.
Discussions focused on maritime security, sustainable ports, food production, and marine renewables.
FAMOS contributed to workshops on marine renewable safety and Multi-Use Platforms (MUPs).
FAMOS Joins the Ocean Decade: Advancing Science for a Sustainable Future
We are thrilled to announce that FAMOS has been officially endorsed as part of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), also known as the Ocean Decade.

1st FAMOS Summer School – Apply Now
The first FAMOS Summer School will take place from July 14th to 18th, 2025, at the University of Florence, Italy. The program will cover Ocean Waves, Marine Renewables, Floating Structures, and Stakeholder Engagement, combining lectures and hands-on sessions.
Open to Master’s and PhD students, as well as anyone interested, participation is free but limited to 25 attendees. Selection will be based on CVs and motivation statements. No remote attendance or financial support is available.
